Don’t forget your SUNSCREEN!
The fabulous sun in Florida is hotter than you think, especially if you’re from up North. It’s so easy to underestimate the heat and UV rays. Sun poisoning and heat stroke are real issues so during your trip this season remember to:
When choosing a sunscreen, use an SPF of 30 or higher. Be sure to check your sunscreen’s expiration date, and make sure that your sunscreen blocks BOTH UVA and UVB rays. If you have sensitive skin, look for a sunscreen without PABA or fragrances. Look for Zinc or Titanium UV filters instead.
Apply your sunscreen thoroughly, and then reapply every few hours or when getting out of the water. Don’t forget to protect your lips and eyelids too. At any sign of burning – cover up or get out of the sun!
Try to limit Caffeine and Alcohol too. Both will dehydrate you. But let’s face it, this is vacation, so if you do have a Frozen Margarita or a cold Beer, be sure to balance it with at least double the amount of plain water. (2 bottles of water for every bottle of beer).
5. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEATSTROKE!
— Skin that is hot to the touch
— Excessive sweating
— Dizziness or disorientation
— Nausea or vomiting
— Rapid heartbeat
— Dark and/or frequent urination
If you experience any of these symptoms, get out of the sun immediately and drink fluids. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention immediately.
